Tampa woman killed by negligent discharge.
I hate hearing stories like these. They seem to be more and more rare these days, but every one strikes me as needless waste of human life. Obeying the four rules of gun safety would have kept this from happening. Understanding the manual of arms for the Glock would have kept this from happening.
Because they can't be repeated often enough...
Rule one: All guns are always loaded.
Rule two: Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Rule three: Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
Rule four: Always be sure of your target and what lies beyond.
When unloading any semi-automatic pistol with a removable magazine, the "make safe" procedure is universal.
One: Remove the magazine.
Two: Rack the slide, verifying the chamber is empty.
Three: Optionally drop the hammer/decock with the gun pointed in a safe direction.
That's it. Four rules, two steps, and accidental shootings like this won't happen. I've heard people complain that Glocks are less safe because you have to pull the trigger to disassemble it. Bullshit. It is a gun. It is not safe. Hence the rules. Only the user is safe or unsafe.
Know the rules. Know how your gun works. And never, ever hand a gun to someone who doesn't know both the rules and how it functions. |
