I am continually amazed at the variety of search tools that land folks on my site. I regularly update my link/search-term tracking scripts to manage new search engines that seem to pop up on a daily basis.
What I don't understand is... why do people use all these strange search engines? Google works far better. Yahoo isn't bad. MSN is pretty decent. What the hell are "Gigablast", "Kartoo", "Sify" and "Fazzle"?
I think my script currently handles about 100 different search sites. A lot of them are "Google Powered" or "Yahoo Powered", which makes my life easier, because the POST variables are easy to grab and parse. But a lot of them have strange custom search strings, which makes it a pain in the ass to keep track of them all.
Once again, custom coding has its pitfalls, but at least I don't have to wait on the latest version of a third-party tool. Plus, it is a good exercise in programming.
