A Deputy Spouting the Brady Line Comment
    Gregory Morris, 6/27/07 7:38:13 am
Here is a story about a perfectly good sting operation in which the Pinellas County Sheriff opened a pawn shop for the purpose of catching thieves. They did in fact catch quite a few. However, this line bothered me:
One man, yet to be identified even brought in two bansaleers (sic) of .50 caliber ammunition.

I think they mean "bandaliers" for one thing... but anyway... so friggin what? Now here is what really grinds my gears:
“You’re talking a six inch bullet, that can take an airplane down,” said a undercover deputy with the Sheriff’s office who asked not to be identified.

I wouldn't want to be identified either if I was a moron. That is unnecessary fear-mongering. There is nothing illegal about .50 cal rounds, and the fact that they are big and scary looking doesn't mean they "can take an airplane down". They weren't designed for, and have never been used for, that purpose. And of course, the reporter was probably overjoyed to print the rubbish.

Holy SHIT! They're making .50 cal bullets with heat seeking / homing capabilities now?

    And in bansoliers, no less.

    "a six inch bullet"

Umm, no, maybe a six inch cartridge, but not the bullet.

    Clueless in Pinellas County?

I can't imagine that in a gun-loving-ish state like FL, more than a handful of the cops are gonna be real bozos when it comes to guns... I guess the reporter got lucky and found one.

Of course I could be wrong. I've only been here a month, and I've never even spoken to a Pinellas County cop. The only cop I've spoken to since I've been in Florida was one who was lost and needed directions...

They weren't designed for, and have never been used for, that purpose.

Not to nitpick but we need to be careful about absolutes. Anti-gunners will pick out one slightly less than accurate statement and then scream "see!!! All the gun nuts are liars!!!".

In fact the .50 round was used extensively in anti-aircraft applications during WWII and even into Korea. Fighters, bombers and anti-aircraft gunners were regularly armed with them for taking down enemy aircraft...they were much more effective in air to air applications and most fighter pilots closed to within a couple of hundred yards (the closer the better) before shooting because...even with multiple machine guns spitting out thousands of rounds per minute...it's not easy to hit an object moving at high speeds...even when that's what your equipment was designed for and your target is relatively large.

Of course, various rounds of approximately .30 caliber were used by all sides for this purpose as well and were only slightly less effective.

I'm not arguing with your premise, you are right on point...just be careful about the absolute statements like "never used for that purpose".

Of course, you are right. I was referring to civilian-ownable firearms of course, but it is important to be careful. Actually, while we are being precise, let me say easily owned, non-class III firearms. I doubt many people have working .50s in their restored WWII aircraft. That being said, the success rate of bombers using a machine gun (of any caliber) to take down an enemy fighter during WWII was extremely low. I don't know what ground-to-air statistics are, but I'd guess even lower. I also am not educated on what, if any, fighters carry or carried .50 caliber guns... although whichever ones did would likely have had a higher success rate than the bombers, since their guns were the primary weapon.

Anyway, people assume "take an airplane down" these days means a terrorist with a rifle, which would be so difficult to believe that it is almost laughable.

I'll try to be more careful with my wording, but sheriff's deputies should take extra care when talking to the media. Tens of thousands of people saw that article, while maybe a dozen saw mine :)

You're absolutely right of course. Especially about the unnamed deputy's comments. A law enforcement professional should be better informed (or less blatantly bigoted).
