I haven't posted in a while... I guess I just haven't had time. Or more likely, wanted to stay as far away from the computer as possible. Anyway, classes started this week... all of mine are on Tuesdays/Thursdays. My first class of the semester was at 9:30 this morning (computational complexity.) I got there early, and sat around while about 20 more people filtered in. At about 9:20, my old undergrad advisor came in and told us that the professor had sent out an email the night before, and class was cancelled. She's out of town at some conference. I figure she could have sent out the email sooner... I mean, obviously most of the class didn't check their email. Heck, I don't even check my CSEE account more than once a week or so.
Oh well, great way to start the school year.
On a similar topic, I have to start deciding on a research topic for my thesis. I don't have to do it now, but I can't fill out my plan of study until I do that. The plan of study doesn't really matter that much, but I can't sign up for summer research/thesis courses until I've filled it out. Also, I can't fill it out until I have a professor to sponsor my research. So basically, I have to decide what I want to do, convince some professor to sponsor me, fill out the plan of study form, and then I can start getting credit for doing research. This wouldn't really bother me that much, except the college only offers one or two graduate courses in the summer. That means whatever boring class they offer, I have to take if I want to finish my masters any time soon. So I'll probably end up taking some stupid database course, or maybe if I'm lucky, an advanced algorithms class this summer. Of course, who knows what they'll offer... the course search page says this when I tried to find out:
NOTE: Course information is not available for semesters earlier than Summer I 1997.
Term Attempted: 200405
Go figure. I bet it was programmed by business majors.
Anyway, hopefully my Cluster Computing professor this semeseter will be able to help me with my research. She's a complete genius with an endearing "absent-mindedness". I put the absent-mindedness in quotes because she really isn't absent-minded at all. She just has better things to think about. You can tell by looking at her that she has about ten mind-bending computer science break-throughs going through her head every second. Besides being a genius, she's also a hardcore bible scholar, somewhat multi-lingual, and from what I hear, she's pretty damn good at knitting.
Ya know, I just realized that both of my professors this semester are women. Thats cool.
I think there are only five or six women professors in the department, and I've had classes with all of them as of this semester. I've also noticed that most of the women professors in the Computer Science department are some of the smartest people I've ever met in my entire life. Some of the guys are too, but most of them are just damn good programmers or damn good software engineers, or database gurus, or whatever. The women professors I've had seem to have a deeper interest in innovation and trying new things out... they move around a lot more. My Cluster Computer professor, for instance, has ongoing projects in such a wide range of topics, it is just amazing that she can keep everything inside her head at the same time. A lot of the male professors seem stuck in their ways, not willing to change things that they know. I'm not saying that all of them are like this, but I could certainly name a handful.
Well, anyway, that is what I have to say. I didn't really mean to leave a long post really, it just sorta happened. That, and I like to ramble. Speaking of rambling, |
