You know why I refuse to live in an HOA community?
Because those who give up some of their freedoms for a small increase in property value deserve neither.
With the state of many HOAs I've read about/seen first hand/spoken with members, the tyrannical heavy hand of housewives and retirees, with nothing better to do, dictates binding policies. Policies that you must follow or you could lose your house. Even in deed-restricted communities where everything runs smoothly, and everyone gets along... home owners are only one voting cycle away from having a bad board of directors, who are generally allowed to make far-reaching decisions about your personal property.
The way I see it, the only two entities that should legally be allowed to put a lien on your house are your bank and the IRS... and given my feelings about the IRS, it should really only be the bank.
I know... people who buy into one of these communities (it's hard not to in Florida) should know what they are doing, and are contractually bound to live with the consequences. I'm not saying we should do away with this type of community... I'm just ranting about how much they piss me off. I will never buy a house with a deed covenant that puts decisions about my personal property (or in the case of the linked article, my freedom of speech) in the hands of someone else. I also encourage anyone I talk to who is contemplating purchasing a new home to avoid HOAs like the plague. |
