Sure, we borrow them from PA on occasion, but you won't find such strong community support for a rifle team many other places.
WVU's rifle team has been a point of pride for the school for years and years. I mentioned before the tough situation they were in a few years ago, when the school decided that the team was not worth funding. Proof of the importance to our community was seen clear as day in the rallying of support from campus all the way to the state capital.
What I'd like to see now is more of a push for high school level competition. Schools are terrified of having anything to do with guns, and this is one reason that you see less and less news about collegiate rifle teams. Why not foster safety and marksmanship in school instead of bowing to hoplophobic soccer moms? Are people really afraid that learning to shoot an air rifle or a .22 will turn students into rabid bloodthirsty lunatics? That is the kind of mentality that is hurting the collegiate sport. Well, if it makes you feel better, WVU had a Psychologist as head coach for 11 years.
Anyway, if you want more information about the WVU Rifle team, or the collegiate sport in general, check out th e WVU Rifle Team's page at MSN (their actual page is still a work in progress.) |
