If are an evil, communist, dictator asshole, and you decide to honor a smelly, murderous, communist asshole with a big, ugly, glass monument...you really deserve this.

So you're saying that if you have an evil, republican, dictator asshole that it's okay?

I'm not sure where you get that impression of me.

Listen... I have said it before, but I'll say it again just for clarification: I don't like George W. Bush. He has trashed our rights almost as bad as the Democratic Party would like to. He has done quite a few good things, but by-and-large those are overshadowed by the bad things he has done. His "evil" may be part truth, but it is mostly media spin. The thing is, every single president since George Washington has increased the power of the White House, and decreased the power of the people.

That being said, I am also not a Republican. Supporting the Constitution doesn't make me a Republican... it makes me an American. Supporting Free Market Capitalism doesn't imply that I love evil dictator assholes, it means the exact opposite. I love America. I love the ideal of freedom, be it economic, cultural, religious or social. I think Socialists politicians (these days they refer to themselves as "progressives") are the biggest danger to our liberty. Worse than Al Qaeda. Worse than Iran. Worse than sick children without health insurance. Socialism, as pushed by Hillary Clinton and her ilk, would absolutely ruin our economy, destroy our industry, and tax us into oblivion. Putting control of certain industries such as healthcare into the hands of the government is the worst idea I can possibly imagine. Socialism is the very definition of a "slippery slope"... it doesn't work perfect in little bits so you cede more power to the government, hoping that will fix the problem. Each time something goes wrong, you turn to the government for help, and they ask for more power. Please tell me you can see where this leads!

Greg, I'm not accusing you of being Republican/Democrat or otherwise... I'm just pointing out that the candidates you seem to support via previous blog entries are no better than Bush.

Just today, it has come to light that $2,300,000,000 will be spent on this war. How exactly is it a free market when the government just hands out money hand-over-fist to military contractors. Wouldn't that money be better spent on healthcare, pollution-reduction (a double-win which results in less disease), and alternative energy (which reduces foreign energy dependency)? How about torturing innocent people for 'freedom'? I see all the Republican candidates (except Ron Paul) pushing for more and bigger guantanamos (oes?).

How about the fact that meat prices are so low because the corn industry (not mom-and-pop farms) get billions in subsidies each year? Is that a free market? Does the free market keep your tech job in the u.s.? I think someone in China or India could do my job and your job for much less money..... just wait for that day to come with your raised 'free market' flag.

I don't think that Fred Thompson or Ron Paul are "no better than Bush"... I think they are both much better. Ron Paul would stop spending money on the war altogether... which I have mixed feelings about. We are spending wayyyy too much money on the war, and everything else. However, while we are in the war, there is no reason we shouldn't make damn sure that we are doing the best we can to keep our troops well supplied and supported. I'd hate to see another Vietnam-like scenario where we pull out, without stabilizing the country, and all of the people who supported us in Iraq get slaughtered. You can argue about the war however you want, but it is all beside the point... I hate to say things like "you break it, you bought it", but that is the most responsible course of action. Bush screwed up, but that doesn't mean we can't at least patch things up some.

"...just hands out money hand-over-fist to military contractors." Defense is, and should be, the number one expense for our country. I'm not saying it is all being well-spend right now, but most of it is. People like to demonize "military contractors", but the fact of the matter is that they do a better job than if the government tried to do the work themselves. I know, I've seen the difference first-hand.

"Wouldn't that money be better spent on..." NO! We shouldn't take (arguably) poorly spent money, and just spend it even more poorly elsewhere! That money should come back into your pocket and mine. Healthcare is not the government's job... it never was, and that's how it should remain. Contrary to popular belief, nobody (legally or illegally) in this country can be denied healthcare. Programs like SCHIP are to provide health-insurance to children, not healthcare. there is a HUGE difference. Every single child in this country can receive free healthcare as it is, and I lay the blame 100% on parents who do not take advantage of that. Giving out government-run health insurance is detrimental to our economy, because it adds artificial forces into an otherwise smoothly running free-market.

Guantanamo does not equal torture. I'm sorry, but people are crying about this way too much. First of all, I don't have a problem with us having a military prison outside of our country. I don't believe that "torture" has ever happened on a wholesale basis. As long as we aren't driving burning bamboo rods under their fingernails to acquire intelligence, I'm OK with some psychological tactics. Sorry if that makes me sound like an asshole, but what we do doesn't come close to what most of the rest of the world does. Secondly, Guantanamo isn't just a prison, it is a military base which borders a communist country. Some say the cold war is over, but it is starting to get hotter in South and Central America... and Cuba, along with Venezuela will be fanning the flames.

Regarding farm subsidies... I disagree with any artificial, government-funded force in a free market. I know a lot of candidates support these because they win votes in many rural states. When you start pushing for more subsidies for ethanol production and such, it doesn't do a damn thing to help the environment. It is purely political. I'm a libertarian and a scientist, hence my distrust of government mandates. Let the free market decide what kinds of fuels are best.

"Does the free market keep your tech job in the u.s.?" Um, well, it would help if we didn't do everything we could to screw up our economy. For instance, minimum wage laws don't only affect minimum wage earners. As for my particular job... well, it isn't getting sent to India any time soon. Regardless, a lot of people are pushing for "Free Trade" as well, which makes it even easier to ship our jobs out of the country. Free Trade would be a fantastic idea if we let the Free Market work, but since the government can't keep their damn regulations off our businesses, works can and will be shipped out of the US as fast as it is profitable to do so.
