A Competition for Gun Bloggers Comment
    Gregory Morris, 10/22/07 12:23:32 pm
To all the gun-bloggers out there (and gun-blog readers as well) my post about a recent convert just got me thinking... I've always said the #1 thing we can do to maintain our second amendment rights is educating the masses. That doesn't mean spouting off political and technical nonsense that will either go over their heads or piss them off. I mean we have to take newbies to the range. Lots of them. Every one of us should be doing this as often as possible. As much as our donations to the NRA are a Good Thing(TM), spending money at the range with "curious hoplophobes" is even better. The NRA has always said "take a kid hunting" and things of that nature, and I couldn't agree more. But a day at the range is much more accessible, requires only basic safety training, can be done at any time during the year, and doesn't cost much money. Pay the $30 for someone's range fee and a box of ammo. What can it hurt?

David's "buy some ammo" day was a huge success... this could be too.

    Here's what I'm thinking, for a gun-blogger competition:
-Keep a running tally of people you have taken to the range.
-To qualify, the person has to fit into the "never touched a gun before" or "haven't shot a gun since that .22 when I was a kid" category.
-You must offer basic firearms safety training (4 rules, operation instructions for models of firearm they will be shooting, etc.)
-You are not required to pay for all expenses, but that certainly helps convince people to go with you.
-If you took someone new in the last month, I'll count it.

    Scoring:
    -1 point for each newbie
-1 bonus point if they ask to do it again
-10 bonus points if they are an "Authorized Journalist"
-15 bonus points if they are an elected official

I'll keep a running tally of whatever people send me, and post monthly reports as needed. I'll think up some kind of prize to give-away (first person to break 25 newbies?) as well... Leave a comment or drop me an email if you are interested, or if you have ideas for improving my suggested rules.

Looks like AC gets the first score.

I'm supposed to take a partial-hoplophobe (considers himself "neutral" which I read as "I believe what the media says"). I think he may have shot before, but still.

My objective is open though - I aim to only change voting habits when it comes to gun laws. Nothing more, nothing less. If you end up liking it and want to own a gun, that's a bonus.

That's the goal isn't it? It is all about education, not conversion of a drooling liberal to a proud, gun-toting NRA member. Let me know how the trip goes (I'll add one or two points to your tally.) In fact, just give me a call when you go... my lovely wife needs some practice anyway.

Sebastian (PGP) scores a huge one. I think I'll add "former or current member of an anti-gun group" as a +10 bonus.

How many points do we get if they like it so much they purchase their own gun? ???? Bonus Points for difficulty rating- like getting Diana Schimik (the Mrs. Fauntelroy of The Society For The Preservation of Everything of the Nebraska Unicameral) to take up IDPA......... that would be THE Trifecta.....

Jimbob, next go-round, we'll add points for newbies buying their own gun. I just didn't really think that it fell within the scope of the competition, because I'm more concerned with education than selling guns.

I think I included points for the most relevant "difficult persons". Politicians are most important to educate, IMHO. Journalists come in at a close second. Anti-gun organization members are hard, but less important (although any one we get is still a huge victory... I just don't think a trip to the range would change their puny little minds.)

Remember, when I say "anti-gun organization", it doesn't HAVE to be the Brady Campaign. It can be any organized group that you can argue to me has a firm anti-gun philosophy.

Oh, and if you get Paul Helmke to shoot an AR15 and admit it is fun... that is an immediate win.
