Ok, my better half decided that she needed to take a trip to the range tonight. She had a tough day. We all have those "man, I need to command some copper-jacketed lead to move briskly toward a piece of paper" days.
Since my wife is in the market for a (few) gun(s), we decided to rent something new, just to try it out. This time, we decided upon a Springfield XD-9. I've wanted to shoot one for a while, and she just wanted to shoot something bigger than my .380 mouse-gun.
Initial reaction: I like it. I didn't notice much difference between it and a Glock, in terms of how it feels/shoots... The trigger pull was amazingly light (almost too light if you ask me), but they are single-action-only-or-half-cocked-or-whatever-you- call-it...
Anyway... I mostly wanted to try one to get the feel for its operation, feel, weight, etc. I liked all of that. We each fired about 50 rounds. Beth had two jams, which were probably "limp wrist" caused, but it still concerned me. I mean, I didn't have any jams, but say I've only had about 4 jams ever with my .380, and it has seen thousands upon thousands of rounds. My wife needs a gun that isn't going to jam (which to me means a revolver, but she isn't sold on that idea either.) She did figure out how nice it is for every trigger pull to be identical. My Bersa is a DA/SA, and she has a hard time adjusting to different trigger pulls. I kinda agree... when I fire it without cocking the hammer, my first and second shots are never particularly good ones, but hers are lucky to be on the paper.
She picked up a bunch of other guns to see what else she's like to try... she has a problem with smaller grips, so she's been trying to find something that fits her hand perfectly. I think it is more important just to get good with the gun you have, but if we're buying a brand new one anyway, why not find one she can just pick up and shoot good groups? On our way out, she picked up a S&W MP40, and loved it with the fat back-strap installed. Next time we go to the range, we'll probably rent that one. So I see myself having to fork out $600 or so for a new pistol for the wife soon. That's in addition to the shotgun she wants. And the Coronado Leather purses she found. My wallet hurts already.
Oh, I almost forgot... we tried a new range today as well. We've been meeting Robb at his range which is all the way on the other side of town. I've been meaning to try closer ones anyway. Anyway, Knight's is a classy joint. Super-safe (although, they might go a little overboard... better than the opposite I guess.) Clean. Knowledgeable staff. Decent selection of "stuff" (although not nearly as many firearms as Shoot Straight.) The best thing is, the range is air conditioned. I've never been to an air conditioned range. Ah, the luxery. Oh, they also have Title 2 (Class III) weapons for rent. Talk about COOL. Expensive, but COOL. Their rifle ranges are only 50 yards, but they allow anything up to and including a .50 BMG... I know I'm gonna have to try one of them sometime. Perhaps when I have lots of extra money to throw around (hah!)
Something else neat, when we got there, the only other folks at the range were two women who had never shot before. They just up and decided to go shoot. I think that is a lot more common than most people would have you believe. They looked like they had a good time anyway.
So I'll probably be going again soon, to take some newbies, and to pick up a prize for the competition. I didn't get anything tonight because my lovely wife was too busy oggling various guns and asking (me and the employee) billions of questions. |
