Ok, gun people. I need some help. I want to find a handgun. One that’s everything I need. Problem is that I don’t know a ton about the different kinds and specs etc. And Greg is some how convinced that my perfect gun doesn’t exist. Please tell me what you all think. I need some suggestions of what to try next time we go to the range. Below is a list of what I think I want. But I’m open to having my mind changed.
My list of what I want in a gun:
1. Feels good in my hand- I want a long thick grip. Preferable curved. I have long hands and fingers and I want to feel like I’m actually holding on to the gun instead of holding onto my fingers. Interchangeable grips are a plus! I kind of like some of the guns that have both a compact and an extended magazine with a boot on it and the option to switch back and forth depending on the situation. I also don’t mind it being heavy. I’d rather have heavier than lighter.
2. SAFE, SAFE, SAFE- OK, I am paranoid. Maybe it’s because I’m just not 100% comfortable with handguns yet, but I’m like this in every aspect of my life. I’m a contingency planner extraordinaire. I really like the act of switching on and off a manual safety. But with that said I’d also like it to have a grip and trigger safety. I know Greg says this might not be possible. But in my ideal world I can get anything I want. J
3. Easy to operate- Too complicated and I won’t feel comfortable with it. I want easy to use, operate, and be able to disassemble myself for cleaning.
4. Quality- This is very important. As Greg mentioned earlier the XD jammed twice on me in not too many rounds. That’s not OK. I don’t know how to fix jams quite yet, but will learn. It still makes me uneasy. What if I need to use it and I’m scared and shaky and develop a “limp wrist.” My life is dependent on it not jamming or misfiring. I want a high quality piece that’s been tested over and over and over and has been around long enough to work any kinks out. Preferable by a well-known gun maker.
5. Revolver vs. Pistol- Not sure. I like revolvers except for one thing. No safety. And don’t even bother to tell me it has a “trigger safety” because that doesn’t really count in my mind. I do want something that has a light trigger pull. I just like the way it feels. I might possibly prefer a metal frame, but I’m very open to polymer because of all the options.
6. Caliber- So apparently I’m going to describe this all wrong. Greg tried. I don’t see the difference. Something about muzzle loading pistol. I’ll just assume you know what I mean. I like anything between 9mm and .45cal. I will never consider a .22. Never.
7. Carry Conceal- I’m a woman. I carry a purse. As long as it’s small enough to fit in a huge purse I always carry anyway then it’s small enough. I just can’t deal with those teeny tiny guns that look like you can only use two fingers to hold the gun. I want something that might actually frighten someone if you had to point it at them. That’s right gentlemen, size does matter.
8. Price- Greg says I always pick out the most expensive things. Try not to tell me to buy a $1000 handgun.
