Since Fred seems to be floundering, and McCain is on a bit of a surge, I figured I'd take a look at where he stands on some of the issues that are important to me. I already know I disagree with him regarding McCain-Feingold. I know I disagree with him regarding the amnesty bill that he was recently pushing. Both of those are serious, but neither are deal-breakers.
On the Second Amendment I know he isn't 100%. His campaign page at least makes it seem as if he understands the issue, as opposed to some people who just parrot Brady Campaign talking points. The biggest nit I have to pick with him is on the "gun show loophole". From the text presented, he understands that federal law applies the same at a gun show as it does elsewhere. That is a start. However, he seems to think it is somehow possible for individuals to perform background checks. The only conceivable way that could work is by requiring all purchases to go through licensed dealers. While this is also not a deal-breaker for me, it begs the question, "if you want to do this at gun shows, then what about other private sales?" I don't like the idea of adding a layer of bureaucracy to a man selling a deer rifle to his buddy. If it ever comes to that, then you have a de facto backdoor registration, and that is something that cannot be allowed under any circumstance.
A smaller issue I have is requiring trigger locks or similar devices with firearms as they are sold. While I think it is stupid, it doesn't do anything more than add a few bucks to the cost of my firearm, and add a trigger lock-sized piece of trash to the local landfill. It makes no sense, but as long as he isn't requiring that they be used, then I don't really care.
He's still too much of a calculated politician, but at least he isn't an evil robot like Senator Clinton. He will still allow for too much wasteful spending of my money, even though his website claims: "John McCain will veto every pork-laden spending bill and make their authors famous." I don't buy that. He is still too willing to compromise on things he should hold firm on. But, at least he isn't calling for socialized health care.
Other than Thompson, McCain is looking to be the closest thing to a compromise that I can think of. Doesn't it suck that I even have to consider that? I guess I could just not vote. But I will. I have to. I refuse to be one of those people who complains about politicians, yet doesn't bother to vote.
On the 29th, when I place my vote, it will probably still be for Fred. However, in a general election, I'd be a lot more comfortable getting behind McCain than Huckabee, Romney or Giuliani.
I'm not giving up on Fred entirely, but I am beginning to think he may serve better as a VP candidate. |
