Haven't been to the range in a while. Haven't even tried out my new Mossberg 702. Having a new unfired rifle has got me itching.
Some people collect guns and keep them new in their boxes as if they were Star Wars figurines. I can't do that. I always played with my toys as a kid. The box was tossed aside as soon just as it was placed in my hands. My baseball cards always had bent corners. My GI Joes always had missing parts. Similarly, I don't like shiny new guns... I like guns that have powder in those little crannies where you can't quite get it clean... where the underside of the slide is scratched... where you have had to lock-tite some screw in place, because you've shot it loose. A gun without that kind of character is worthless to me. The first firearm I ever purchased was my Ishevsk M44, and it just had gobs of character underneath the 60-year-old cosmoline. I've considered buying surplus rifles simply because of what is carved into the stock. I prefer a well-loved firearm to a brand-spanking-new one, because you don't have to break it in. That's just how I roll. |
