According to Tampa Bays 10, state legislators are considering more gun laws.
I hope they aren't considering them too hard... ya know, in case they want to be re-elected.
Here's the deal:Their bill (SB 782 and HB 425) would set a mandatory life sentence for any criminal killing or seriously injuring someone with a gun. The current penalty is 25 years in prison. First of all, mandatory minimum sentences are not "tough on crime", they are "stupid on crime." My question about this is, do they have to be a criminal prior to committing this crime, or does shooting someone automatically qualify an otherwise law-abiding citizen for life in jail?
The bills would also increase penalties for displaying a gun or shooting it without hitting anyone, during a crime. The bill applies to "a semi-automatic firearm and its high-capacity detachable box magazine," as well as concealed weapons used in crimes. Sounds like they are trying to sneak some "assault weapon" garbage in the back door.
Jenne said the legislation would also make it a felony, punishable by 15 years in prison, to sell such weapons to known felons. Sellers could also be fined $25,000. Sell to known felons, or knowingly sell to felons? There's a big difference there. If someone knowingly sells a firearm to a felon, then they have already committed a crime. I'm gonna go find the bill and read up on it. I'm sure Marion Hammer will have something to say about it before long. |
