Uncle Lays Out Why The GOP Is Dying Comment
    Gregory Morris, 2/13/08 9:32:35 pm
Because they keep pushing out group after group. I agree that the Good Old Party ain't so Good anymore, and most of the Old part is drying up. In the end, there will be no Party left. My question is, how do we unite disenfranchised Republicans under a single banner? Are there even any core issues that "conservatives" can agree upon anymore? Small Government (not that anyone knows what that means anymore)? Conservative fiscal policy (not that anyone has the balls to execute it)? Lower taxes (which happens on occasions, but not to any great effect)? Individual liberty (which is slowly eroded by every D and R in Washington, no matter what)? Personal responsibility (sadly, those days are over)? It seems to me, and many other unhappy non-democrats that real conservatives no longer exist within the GOP leadership, and those who remain are nothing more than power-hungry liberal wolves in republican clothing.

This begs another question... what are the core values holds the Democratic Party together?

    Update:

Tam has another take on the GOP. Also worth thinking about. Perhaps the GOP hasn't gotten "smaller", but rather it is simply confused.

    Update 2:

Whoops. My lovely wife reminded me that GOP is "Grand" Old Party, not "Good". Not that it changes much really.

'what are the core values holds the Democratic Party together? '

    Hating Republicans.

The core values of the Democratic Party are Power and Control.

Hating Republicans... Good point. I guess that also can be a unifying factor for us disenfranchised conservative-types, except we desperately hold onto the GOP, as if it were a sinking boat in shark-infested waters.

Power and Control... also true, but that is also true the modern Republican Party.

Are people who love individual freedom and limited government really in the minority?

Core values of the Democrats - hating Republicans and Liberal bigotry aside, the core values center around Collectivism and the basic tenants laid down my Marx and Lenin many decades ago disguised as "Progressive" and forward-thinking.

    Yes, sadly.

Well, they're not the ones who are about to get their mortgages bailed out by Uncle Sam, now are they?

Bailed out by me, you mean.

I've always said the way to win the gun control battle is by taking newbies to the range. How about educating people on the concept of individual liberty? The first step might be exactly the same.

"This begs another question... what are the core values holds the Democratic Party together? "
Answer: Hope and Change. Oh, and Che Guevara t-shirts.

"how do we unite disenfranchised Republicans under a single banner?"
Answer: In a 2 step process: 1) Put forth a good candidate for president (oh wait, we had 2 and opted instead for McCain and Romney...and Huckabee...) 2) start kicking people out of congress (oh wait, the turnover rate in congress is near 0...). New answer: we're screwed until the country collapses under the weight of socialism/fascism and we have to have a good-old-fashioned revolution to save our last untrampled rights (if there are any by the time the Democrats are done with the country).

If McCain chooses Lieberman as his running mate, It'll be easy.

Yeah, well even though it's technically Grand Old Party, I think you were more accurate than your lovely wife. I have seen nothing "grand" from the GOP since Reagan (and since I'm too young to actually remember Reagan, and since Reagan of 1964 was far better sounding than Reagan of 1980-88, I don't think I've ever seen anything "grand" from the GOP). George Bush: "Privatize Social Security." *ears perk up* George Bush: "No, just kidding. How about a massive increase in the Department of Education and in the Medicare Program instead?" I think at best they can be called the "Good" Old Party. Maybe Tepid Old Party or Decent Old Party. Or Could Be Grand Old Party If They Meant What They Said Instead Of More Empty Rhetoric (CBGOPITMWTSIOMER), but that would be far too long and confusing an acronym and it would take up like 2 lines in newsprint, so no newspaper would want to call it that.

    Perhaps "Somewhat Liberal Old Party"?

SLOP, I like it! Maybe that could be the new party slogan for the election in November!
