I shot my brand new SAR-1 for the first time this evening. A few observations...
One, 30 round magazines are gonna get expensive. The largest capacity firearm I've ever owned before now holds 10 rounds. Small magazines slow you down when you are in the mood to do some blasting. 30 round magazines just keep shooting forever.
Two, AK trigger slap sucks. I gotta look into fixing that. I guess it is common in the CAI imported and retrofitted Romanian rifles. I've read some things people have suggested, from modifying various parts, to installing new parts, to wrapping something squishy around the trigger. Whatever I decide, I gotta do something if I ever want to shoot more than one or two magazines at a sitting. Of course, the discomfort after a few magazines slows you down better than having small magazines.
Three, after spending 30 minutes carefully cleaning my SAR-1, I feel like I have just wasted 30 minutes. I always clean every gun after a trip to the range. Even if I don't detail them, I always at least run some Hoppes-soaked patches down the bore, and wipe off any gunk. However, it seems that no matter what I do to this rifle, it won't ever be clean. More importantly, it doesn't seem like it would even matter. The rifle seems like it really would function packed with dirt and rocks.
Four, the Kalashnikov-ish action is one of the most amazingly ingenious mechanical designs I've ever seen. Until I bought this one, I'd never even picked one up. It is so ridiculously simple, foolproof, and intuitive, I now understand what the big deal is about this peasant's rifle. When I brought it home, I field stripped it, cleaned it, and re-assembled it without even thinking about it. As soon as I got it back together, I realized, "Wait a minute, I didn't know how to field strip an AK."
I also shot my new-to-me M91/30. That steel-cased Somewhere-istan surplus 7.62x54R that Robb gave me sucks. Last time I shot it in my M44, I had split cases. I assumed it was a problem with my rifle, since it didn't split in Robb's. Well, my new M91/30, which I shot for the first time this evening, also split the cases. I guess I can't complain about ammo I didn't pay for...
Anyway, I tried another kind of newer steel-cased surplus ammo after I noticed the cases were splitting, and they worked flawlessly. Next gun show I'm gonna find me some honest brass-cased rounds. I'm also un-retiring my M44. |
