Not as close as Peter, whose upper is in the mail... but at least I now have an assembled lower. If the basic parts were easy to install, the buffer tube was ridiculously easy.
As you can see, I got a cheapo carbine-length stock. I decided to go the carbine route instead of the full-length rifle... the wonderful thing about the AR platform is that if I change my mind later, it is easy to fix. I also went with a cheap one because it is easy to upgrade. Plus, the parts I really wanted seem to be in short supply, so I'll have a functional rifle while I'm looking for exactly the right gear. Instant gratification plus endless adaptability!
My plan is to get the thing together as quickly and cheaply as possible. Post-election prices put the fully assembled lower at about $315 after all is said and done. I expect a (very basic) upper (like Peter's Del-Ton, or maybe a Model1) to come in at around $500-$600 shipped. That will still net me a decent black rifle for under $900, which you simply can't find around here anymore, used or new. Occasionally I'll see something in that range on one of the local bulletin boards. But you mostly only see crappy AKs and over-priced SKSs. The local gun shops don't have any AR platform rifles new for below grand, and I've only seen one (heavily) used AR for $899 in the last month.
Now, I just gotta order my upper and hope I get it before the sun burns out. |
