    That shotgun Beth bought? Well it is generally not recommended to shoot high pressure modern loads through old "decarbonized steel" barrels. I've seen some people claim they have shot lighter modern loads out of the same exact gun with no problems, but I think it is better to play it safe.

    So here I am looking at reloading equipment.

    Why do I see myself spending a few hundred dollars trying to find a safe way to feed a $50 shotgun?

    The best advice is to hang the shotgun on the wall and admire it for what it is. But I have this strange and overpowering need to be able to actually shoot any gun I own... even if I only shoot a few rounds through it.

    Anyone have advice on using blackpowder (or similar/cleaner powders) in shotshells?

    While I don't have any advice, I can understand the urge to be able to fire any gun I own despite any handicaps of antiquity. I\'ve got a Winchester Model 1886, .45-90 lever action that is sitting ignored in my closet because I need a replacement lever for it and the proper ammo. (I\'ve been told I can shoot BP .45-70 thru it, being sure to thoroughly clean the chamber afterwards.) Either way, good luck with that hunt. BTW, I came here from Xavier\'s.

    If I had a Winchester 1886, I'd want to shoot it too :)

    I've found short 12ga black powder, paper hulled shells for sale. They run a little more than a dollar per round. That isn't bad to go out and shoot it once or twice, but we clearly won't be feeding this shotgun a lot. It also seems (based on my measurements at least) that it should be OK to fire modern light 2 or 2 1/5 inch shells.

    Actually, since it belongs to my wife, and not me, she may just decide to sell it. I don't have a problem with it since there is no sentimental attachment to the gun, and no history that would make it particularly interesting, other than the story of the Forehand Firearms Company.
