Jay G wants some advice.
Personally, I think Nov. 4th is usquebaugh-time, although there are a few types of barley-juice that will suffice if you find yourself lacking a quality distilled spirit (or if you simply prefer something with bubbles.) I am also partial to Ouzo, although I prefer to only drink Greek booze when I'm in a good mood. So...
The first suggestion I made for Jay is Avery's "The Reverend". This is a lay-you-flat-on-your-ass Belgian-style quadruple. You will need precisely one pint of this potent potable. More than a pint and you risk waking up in another country with sledgehammers inexplicably duct-taped to your arms.
I admit that I have a significant bias towards Belgian ales. If you were to ask my top twenty-five choices, about 18 or so would either be imported from Belgium, or artful copies. I don't expect many people will be able to find handcrafted Tripels brewed by a secret order of monks in 2 gallon batches once every five years. However, there are quality standards which can only be met by smaller operations. The standard go-tos Chimay, Duvel, Ommegang, or Unibroue are always adequate.
Note: some people say French beer is basically the same thing as Belgian. I say those people have probable never tasted French beer. The French take a unique approach to brewing beer: they start by drinking a Belgian ale, then they piss into a bottle, cork it, and increasing the price. Avoid it like the plague.
If you live in such a depressing locale that you can find neither quality whiskey nor Belgian ale, I suggest suicide. Errr... I mean... maybe you can try finding a good Dopplebock. You'll know when you've found a good one because it required a knife and fork to drink it.
If you live in a county or state where Good Beer (tm) cannot be acquired, I suggest driving somewhere else after casting your ballot. Living in a dry county is no excuse for drinking 3-month old sun-struck skunk-piss. |
